ARE MTN'S NEW MADE FOR ME PACKAGES RIGHT FOR YOU?

October 04, 2017

MTN have just unleashed a whole new array of packages under the new ‘Made for Me’ brand which are sure to cause quite a stir. The new packages are extremely customisable which allows consumers to ensure that their contract is perfect for their lifestyle.

This is accomplished by offering 1 of 4 ‘base plans’ which range from Small (at R99/month) to Extra Large (at R699). Each of these base plans comes with a certain amount of minutes, megabytes, and SMSs. However, the consumer then has the option to further enhance their package by adding on a ‘Booster Bundle’. Consumers can choose only one bundle based on their needs, which can either be Voice bundle, a Data Bundle, or a Voice + Data bundle.

MTN are also offering a few ‘freebies’ as part of their launch special which includes 3 months subscription access to Simfy Africa or Showmax, as well as 10GB of data for 3 months for those purchasing an LTE device.

So how do these new packages stack up?

Choose-your-own adventure

MTN’s Made for Me packages are the most customisable deals on the market, allowing you to, in effect, create your own package based on your specific requirements. Commenting on this, Antony Seeff, CEO of Tariffic, a company that helps businesses manage & minimise their cellphone bills, said, “although this does add a level of complexity to the consumer, it also provides a great solution for someone who knows what they want.”

Giving your bundles a Boost

When it comes to pricing, the Booster Bundles clearly offer customers more bang for their buck when compared to Vodacom and Cell C (Telkom’s data bundles are still the most affordable on the market). For example, a 1 GB Made for Me Booster Bundle costs R99 compared to R149 for a 1 GB bundle on both Vodacom and Cell C. A 2 GB Booster Bundle costs R169 compared to R249 on Vodacom and Cell C. It must be noted though that these bundles will stay with you for the duration of the contract, so its effectively a way to customise a contract, as opposed to regular add-on bundles which can be added or removed as necessary.

Keep on rolling for 60 days

MTN are also making bold moves when it comes to unused contract and Booster Bundle value, which will roll over for 2 months. This is different to how most of the cellular industry operates, and may be MTN’s way of taking a pro-active stance regarding potential bundle regulations that ICASA is proposing (they have proposed that 1GB – 5GB bundles should last for 90 days). Either way, this will definitely be appreciated by the growing number of consumers who are expecting their data to last past the 30th of the month.

“We have seen substantial change in the cellular landscape over the past few months with networks regularly unveiling innovative and differentiated offerings to their bases”, says Seeff. Seeff suggests that “although the data pricing for MTN’s new packages can’t compete with the like of Telkom’s Free Me packages, they have introduced a welcome set of tariffs to the market that will surely be well received by those favouring a shade of yellow on their SIM cards.”
