VODACOM’S NEW VODACOM-BRANDED SMARTPHONES

August 25, 2016

Vodacom have just released four new Vodacom-branded smartphones which they have begun selling on contract. Tariffic takes a look at these new phones, as well as the accompanying deals that they are available with, to help you decide if any of these are right for you.

Vodacom Prime 7

The Vodacom Prime 7 is a low-end budget-friendly smartphone released by Vodacom in 2016. It packs a nicely sized 5-inch screen with a resolution of 720p. While the screen doesn't have the clarity of a full HD screen that you might find on a higher end phone, it does have the benefit of consuming less battery.

The pictures you can take with the phone's 8MP camera are average in good lighting conditions and poor in low light conditions. The camera will do the job but don't expect to snap any spectacular photos with it.

With an expandable SD card, you can always add storage space if you're running out - a great feature which is missing on even some high end smartphones.

The Prime 7 can easily make it through a day of normal use, with a 2540mAh battery and a fairly efficient Cortex A7 processor.

Some complaints about the phone include slowness and cheap build quality, but at its price point this is to be expected.

In its price-range, the phone trumps its competitors such as the Galaxy J3 and the Huawei Y6. It comes with a newer version of Android (6.0.1 Marshmallow) which lacks the usual bloatware that phone manufacturers like Samsung and LG ship their phones with. It also comes out on top in battery life and price.

If you're looking for a smartphone which can run your basic apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, email and basic web browsing - all without breaking the budget - then this phone is for you. If you have slightly more to spend on a phone but still aren't enthusiastic about forking out a fortune on a flagship, then the next Vodacom phone review might be the better choice.

For someone who uses 100 minutes, 800 MB and 15 SMSs every month, Tariffic has calculated that the best deal for this phone is on a Vodacom Smart M+ package with an additional 100MB data bundle.

Vodacom Ultra 7

The Vodacom Ultra 7 is a higher end device and falls somewhere in the mid-range of the smartphone market. It has a bigger screen (5.5 inch) with a higher resolution (FHD). The screen is sharp, responsive, and it looks great.

The 13MP rear camera is easy to use, takes good pictures, and can shoot video in full HD. The front facing camera leaves much to be desired however, taking pictures that are often blurry and unfocused.

The phone has a large 2,960mAh battery, which delivers great battery life and the phone easily lasts a full day. Like many new high-end devices, the battery is not removable. This device, like the Prime, also has expandable storage capabilities.

The software that the device ships with is Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Fortunately, the device doesn’t have much bloatware on it, and has the great stock Android feel to it. For someone who uses 100 minutes, 800 MB and 15 SMSs every month, Tariffic has calculated that the best deal for this phone is on a Vodacom Smart M+ package with an additional 100MB data bundle.

Vodacom Smart Platinum 7

The Vodacom Smart Platinum 7 is Vodacom’s flagship device, featuring top-of-the-range hardware. Based purely on specifications, it has newer and more powerful hardware than the Samsung Galaxy S6, and comes in close behind the new Galaxy S7.

Featuring a fingerprint scanner on the back, a QHD screen, a great camera, a big 3,000mAh battery and Google’s latest version of Android, this phone won’t disappoint even the most demanding of users.

Some complaints that have come up about the device is that the glass rear is easily scratched and quickly picks up fingerprints. Some users have also complained about the screen oversaturating red colours. However, considering the device’s competitive price point for a flagship, these are minor issues that probably won’t affect the owner’s experience very much.

If you’re looking for a good value-for-money, high end smartphone then this device won’t disappoint. The Smart Platinum 7 has a vibrant screen, premium-looking build and offers great performance and battery life.

For someone who uses 200 minutes, 1500 MB and 20 SMSs every month, Tariffic has calculated that the best deal for this phone is on a Vodacom Smart S+ package with an additional 1GB data bundle.

Vodacom Smart Kicka 2

The Smart Kicka 2 is Vodacom’s entry -evel device. The device itself only has 512MB of memory and 4GB of storage. This means that although you could possibly run all Android apps, you won’t be able to install too many or run a lot of apps at the same time. More demanding apps will also feel sluggish to use.

The battery is only a 1,500mAh which is exactly half the capacity of the Vodacom Smart Prime 7. The battery is not a problem though because the processor is not as power hungry and the screen is a fair bit smaller.

The device has a low quality rear camera which can take ordinary photos and does not have a front facing camera. This of course means that the phone cannot be used to make video calls and makes taking selfies a tad more difficult.

If you looking for a really cheap smartphone that can make calls, send messages over WhatsApp, and run a few basic Android apps. Bear in mind though that it has limited storage and an entry level camera.

For someone who uses 50 minutes, 300 MB and 10 SMSs every month, Tariffic has calculated that the best deal for this phone is on a Vodacom Smart XS package with an additional 250MB data bundle.
