Last night Apple released the latest version of the iPhone in two models - The iPhone 7, and the bigger iPhone 7 Plus. So what can you expect from these new devices?

For the first time, Apple has opted for IP67 water- and dust-proofing on their latest flagships. Another noticeable difference is of course the absence of the headphone jack. Some have seen this as moving in the right direction for the future, but others have expressed outrage at the fact. Apple is, however including a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter in the box, so your favourite pair of headphones won't end up a paper weight just yet.

Other improvements to the phones include a '40 percent faster' processor and 'two thirds the power' graphics performance to the previous iteration of iPhones. The camera is also said to now perform much better in low light situations. It also features better image stabilisation and a 'flicker-sensor' to prevent flickering lights from showing up in videos.

The Plus model has the most interesting addition to the camera - another camera. Featuring dual rear facing cameras, the iPhone 7 Plus has the ability to zoom optically, have more than one point of focus, and take a short video with one camera while the other snaps an image. Apple's latest software release which is expected later this year will include software for tinkering with depth of field using these new dual cameras.

The screen on the devices remains the same at 1,334 x 750 for the 7 and 1,920 x 1,080 for theiPhone 7 Plus. In this area Apple still lags behind many of its Android competitors whose users boast vivid 2K and even 4k displays.

The phone comes in 32GB, 128GB and 256GB variants, and the 16GB model has finally been scrapped.

When will it be available?

Pre-orders begin on Friday in the US and we expect them to go live here in South Africa towards the end of October or early November, but this is yet to be confirmed.
